ALBANY, N.Y. (June 3, 2010) - Thirteen programs, including those providing primary care, HIV care and substance use treatment, will share more than $2 million in funding to expand their capacity to provide on-site hepatitis C care and treatment throughout New York State, Health Commissioner Richard F. Daines, M.D., announced today.

More than 240,000 New Yorkers are infected with the hepatitis C virus. Within HIV-infected populations, approximately one-third are co-infected with hepatitis C. The programs to be funded will ensure comprehensive and coordinated quality care for people infected with hepatitis C and HIV/hepatitis C, including the uninsured, by providing hepatitis C medical management and treatment, mental health and substance use services, care coordination and peer education/support services within a primary care environment.

"These programs are vital to ensuring New Yorkers living with hepatitis C are assured timely access to quality care and treatment," Commissioner Daines said. "As the number of infected individuals continues to grow, there is a critical need to develop innovative models of care to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with hepatitis C."

AIDS Institute Director Humberto Cruz said, "Hepatitis C is common among persons living with HIV. Liver disease has emerged as a leading cause of morbidity and mortality for people infected with HIV. These programs will help decrease the impact hepatitis C has on people living with HIV infection."
